26 Yıldır Türkiyede yaşayan bir ingilizin gözünden Türkler
As a Brit who’s been living in Turkey for 26 years, speaks Turkish, is married to a Turk and recently became a Turkish citizen, my perspective is a bit unusual. Thinking back over the years, though, I reckon I’ve been through fairly typical stages.
Before knowing any Turks. Turks are a strange cross between Greeks and Arabs. They wear flat caps like Yorkshiremen for some reason and have terrible Eurovision songs.
After meeting Turks and spending some time in Turkey. Turks are the best! They’re friendly and hospitable, they have great food and music, and the taxi drivers are so honest if you leave your wallet in the cab they’ll drive across Istanbul to get it back to you.
After spending some more time in Turkey. Turks are the worst! They’re clannish and closed-minded, and the taxi drivers will drive across Istanbul to run up the meter.
After spending even more time in Turkey. Guess I’m a Turk now.
To sum up, most British people who’ve actually met a fair number of Turks, really like Turks. Like any culture, there are some things that are annoying or just hard to get used to, but Turks are some of the easiest people to get along with - in fact, I’ve heard Turks complain about how they can get on better with foreigners better than each other.
