What is rBGH?
Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH) is an artificially produced version of a cow's natural growth hormone that is manufactured using genetically-engineered bacteria that have the cow gene spliced into their DNA. It is one of the synthetic hormones banned from use in organic agricultural production by the USDA organic standards. Cows injected with this hormone will produce as much as 15% more milk than a cow allowed to produce milk at her natural level. rBGH is sold by the Monsanto Corporation under the trade name "Posilac". USDA organic standards bans the use of rBGH in organic milk production because rBGH is bad for cows:
